GALLERY 8: HORNED PUFFIN
In July of 2003, I traveled to St. Paul Island, Alaska, a very remote destination in the Bering Sea. Although not the easiest destination to reach, St. Paul Island provides excellent photographic opportunities for Horned and Tufted Puffins as well as countless other bird species, Northern Fur Seal and blue phase Arctic Fox. On the first day, we asked our guide whether or not travelers might miss seeing and photographing puffins at close range during this time of year. He responded that it was "inconceivable!" In August of 2010, I was able to photograph Horned Puffins again, in Lake Clark National Park. I was primarily in Lake Clark to photograph Coastal Brown Bears. It rained and was dark most of the week. The time spent with the puffins provided some light and a break from the down pouring rain and ended up being the most productive photography of that trip.
